Our History

Rich Heritage and Community Spirit Since 1795

Oak Ridge's remarkable story began in 1795 when Andrew Ramsay and Alexander Giboney first settled around Ramsey Creek. The community we know today was officially organized in 1852 by John M. Wilson, who purchased the land at $2.50 per acre and established both a store and a bar that served as gathering places for early residents.

The Name

Named perfectly after the natural surroundings, Oak Ridge perfectly justifies its name. We sit on a high ridge that acts as a natural dividing line for water, separating flows into Apple Creek from those heading to the Whitewater River. The abundance of oak trees surrounding our community further reinforces this fitting designation. Early settlers sometimes playfully referred to our area as "Lizard Lick," showing the humor that has always been part of our community character.

A Village of Enduring Heritage

By 1888, the village of Oak Ridge was home to approximately 300 people. The community's deep history is reflected in its two enduring churches—a Methodist and a Baptist church—both constructed in the 1860s (a Presbyterian church once stood here, too). Crucially, Oak Ridge holds the distinction of having been home to Southeast Missouri's first high school, which proudly opened its doors in 1874.

Focused on Education

A strong commitment to education is evident in the community, with most adults possessing a high school diploma. Many also have college degrees, showing a strong focus on education in the community.
